Lawyer’s Profile:

Alex Yeo is a Director of the Firm.

Alex graduated from the University of Sydney in New South Wales, Australia with a LL.B (Honours) degree in 2007. He also holds a B.A. (Merit) degree in Economics and Political Science from the National University of Singapore.

Alex was admitted as a Lawyer and Solicitor in the Supreme Court of New South Wales and the High Court of Australia in 2007. During his time in Sydney, Australia, he was an Associate engaged in corporate practice with a mid-sized City firm.

Alex returned to Singapore in 2008 and joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) where he was appointed as a Foreign Service Officer (Political).

Alex left the MFA in 2010 to join Niru & Co and was admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore in 2012.

In 2017, Alex obtained a Masters in Public Administration from the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy.

Alex handles a broad spectrum of litigation and international arbitration matters. These include civil disputes relating to insurance, banking, finance, international trade, building and construction, commercial contracts, company law, commercial fraud, aviation, professional negligence and various areas of tort law.

Besides dealing with the litigation matters of the Firm, Alex has also diversified his practice to include front-end corporate and commercial advisory work.

Alex is passionate about pro bono legal work and believes that no one should be denied access to legal advice when needed.  He set up the Legal Clinic at Potong Pasir Community Club (PPCC) in 2016 and now runs both the Legal Clinics at PPCC and One Stop at Paya Lebar.

Outside of the office, Alex is involved in voluntary work with the Grassroots Organisations and serves as the Adviser to the Aljunied GRC Grassroots Organisations.  He also serves as Honorary Adviser to the HDB Staff Union and as Deputy President of the Singapore Dragonboat Association.

Significant Matters:

  • Represented, advised and acted for various multinational and local insurers in insurance and reinsurance disputes in major classes of insurance business.
  • Successfully represented Grab in a landmark High Court Judgment (3 Corporate Services Pte Ltd v Grabtaxi Holdings Pte Ltd [2020] SGHC 17) which found that the Plaintiff has failed to prove that it is not a cybersquatter, and public policy considerations do not preclude the enforcement of the contract.
  • Successfully represented Grab in an administrative proceeding under the Singapore Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy in a dispute relating to the registration and use of a domain name (Grabtaxi Holdings Pte Ltd v Clay Branding Pte Ltd [Case no. 2 of 2020]).
  • Successfully represented Singapore Airlines against a subrogated insurance claim for work-related injuries by a Leading Steward which was dismissed in the High Court.
  • Represented Singapore Airlines Engineering Company against a subrogated insurance claim for work-related injuries by an Airport Technician which was dismissed at first instance at the District Court. Successfully obtained indemnity costs against the Plaintiff in the High Court through an Offer to Settle.
  • Represented investors in a dispute centred around the complex legal issue of the nexus of the investments through various different corporate entities. The dispute was successfully settled after mediation at the Singapore Mediation Centre.
  • Represented a group of overseas investors in their claim arising from their investments made through Standard Chartered Bank in entities linked to the ponzi scheme perpetuated by Bernard L. Madoff.
